BASIC CARDIAC SCANNING
Introduction
Detailed echocardiography is definitively the realm of the specialist cardiologist, no question. However, the ability to perform a cardiac examination at a more basic level can still give very useful information on cardiac anatomy and function and lead to a more meaningful referral, when required. This one day course will show you how to produce the 4 basic orthogonal views of the adult heart which will allow assessment of the cardiac chambers and valves.

- Scanning protocol and machine setup
- The 4 basic planes:
- Parasternal long axis
- Parasternal short axis
- Apical 4/5 chamber views
- Substernal 4 chamber view
- M-mode assessment
- Assessment of :
- Chamber size (dilatations)
- Wall thickness and movement (cardiomyopathies)
- Valve movement (stenoses, regurgitations)
- IA and IV septae (septal defects)
- M-mode measurements
- Doppler assessment
- Ejection fraction
- Pericardial sac (effusions)
